1098cc Needle Query.....
Hi James.
David Vizard's book, 'how to modify your mini', has a list of suggested needles. The problem is that the book is so old that the needles being quoted are the original fixed needle type, whcih don't have the modern sprung mounting.
For the 1100 in standard trim the recomendation is for a BQ needle. I might be mistaken, but I think the sprung needles only differ in name to the fixed needles by having an 'A' appended to the start of the needle code, which would mean that an ABQ needle would work. For the 1.75" carb then a 'B' is appended to the code. Minispares list an ABQ needle in their parts list, and the ABP
The book this information comes from is a performance tuning guide, and I would expect the BQ needle to be recommended as beng on the rich side.
Due to the SU needle definition protocol it's fair to say that the code ABQ is in fact only slightly different to the ABP you are talking about, so for that reason alone the ABQ is going to be much closer to what you need than the standard 998 needles normally beginning with 'AA*'
If you can't find any listings, or if nobody can confirm the information, you can always buy the SU needle chart book, look up the 'BQ' profile and match it to a swing needle version of the same fixed needle profile.
Confused enough ? !!!!
Chris
PS, Got the engine installed and running, the primary gear might have too little clearance though and might need some attention. Some negative camber arms and new shocks and bushes are on order. in the * years the car has been on the build the drivers floor has rotted through, so that's another little job to do for the MOT, but I'm much closer to finishing this in a couple of weeks !
